It is both depressing and discouraging to run into a news like this. As a father with young ones, I cannot bare to think that this is how much my gov. cares about our children. This just shows how much we want to invest into the future leaders, thinkers, workers, soldiers, and educators of our future. What these children are eating now will impact their state of mind and body in the future, which will then affect the nation as a whole. I know the reason is “profit” but in the expense of the current and future population? Where is the morality?

Know what's less safe for our nation's children than fast-food? Their school lunch!
It's hard to believe, but hamburgers from McDonald's and Jack in the Box are safer than the meat that America's 31 million children are offered at our nation's schools.
Each year the USDA buys some 100 million pounds of beef for America's school lunch program -- but the USDA refuses to adopt common-sense practices to ensure that meat served to our children is safe.
A recent investigation by USA Today found that the meat sold to U.S. school cafeterias faces less testing and lower safety standards than the meat that's served in most fast-food restaurants -- outlets that aren't otherwise known for their health consciousness and are as cost-conscious as the most passionate deficit hawk.

American children stand a better chance of getting a safe meal at Jack in the Box than they do from their school lunch program. An investigation by USA Today found the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which provides meat and poultry to school lunch programs that feed 31 million children throughout the United States, has lower standards than the fast food industry or commercial food operations.
For instance, KFC and Campbell’s Soup refuses to use “spent chickens”—those that can’t lay eggs anymore and often suffer from brittle bones—while the USDA continues to buy such poultry for school lunches.
